Kerry, my STL Zoo friend, stopped by last evening with a couple of bunches of carrots for the animals. Thank you so much. The animals absolutely loved the carrots and the greenery that came with them.

MEET THE HERD This is Mateo. He was the first llama born on this farm. His birth was an exciting event. I had purchased his mother at a sale. The owner told me that she was due to have a baby in October. I brought her home, and she was a wild child. Would barely let me get within 10 feet of her in the beginning. The day of his birth, I was at Schnucks buying groceries. I received a phone call from a stranger who said to me, you don’t know me, but you have a llama who’s tryi...ng to have a baby and I believe it is stuck. It was April. I left a cart of groceries in the aisle and drove home as safely as I could. This kind gentleman named Matthew, who had simply been walking the trails in Rockwoods Reservation, noticed the problem across the street. He had called me to report the problem. My first Mission was to catch Mateo‘s momma. That was no easy task, but apparently she realized she needed help. I walked behind her very slowly until she walked into the barn. When she was in the barn, I walked up calmly and put my arm around her neck and put a halter on her. Matthew had stayed because I asked for his help. Mateo was having trouble being born, his head and legs were already emerged, but the rest of him was not. I asked Matthew to stand next to Midge, Mateo‘s mama, and talk to her quietly and calmly and when she had her next contraction I pulled gently on the front legs and Mateo was born. He is a very very handsome boy and is a joy to have in my herd. He has many guardian tendencies, which means he is a protector of the rest of the herd. He is a gelded (neutered) male and is so much fun to watch. I hope you have enjoyed hearing about Mateo. By the way, I named him after Matthew, the gentleman who alerted me to his birth. Matthew recommended the name Mateo. And we went with that. If you would like to read more about my individual animals, just let me know, and I will continue to post their stories.

That Lincoln has become and expert at llama care. He’s such a cutie, too.
