Meet Rachel! Rachel Porter is the head of the water gardens department here at Wickman’s. A small town girl with big time talent, Rachel has worked at Wickman’s for 2 years now and has quickly become indispensable to us and to her customers. Rachel grew up in Kearney, MO and worked at an animal clinic there through highschool. She graduated from Missouri State this spring with a degree in Wildlife Conservation and Management and a Forestry minor. Rachel loves a challenge... and is committed to learning and researching to meet the needs of her customers. A passion for nature runs in the Porter family. Rachel enjoys trap shooting, running through the park with her dog Copper, and planning exciting new additions to the water garden department. Rachel’s lifelong love of plants and animals was born from many happy hours spent in nature as a kid with her family. The article below was written by Rachel to help answer your water garden winterizing questions but this is just the tip of the iceberg where her knowledge is concerned. Call or come by to meet Rachel and let her help you make your water garden gorgeous and successful! https://docs.google.com//1JX5bDFYVITNFO_9Nf5Hhr9qe0L/edit

Reflecting, Hoping, Learning AND Free Pansies! Looking back on this Spring and Summer is quite bittersweet for a lot of folks, me included. The shutdown at my children's school due to COVID 19 brought me home full time with them from Spring Break until June. That extra time with them was an unexpected blessing that I wouldn't trade for anything. On the flip side of that, I was very limited in what time I could spend here at Wickman's laboring at the work I love and suppor...ting my coworkers and customers. College students everywhere were denied the chance to finish out their school year, delaying their schooling but also freeing up their time. We were able to add several new young people to the staff here who, in a normal year, would have been too busy with their classes to take a job. They got the chance to learn something new and Wickman's has benefited so much from their enthusiasm and energy. Job loss, supply chain interruptions and sheer, maddening boredom plagued many in our community BUT we saw so many new gardeners filling their time with a rewarding new hobby and filling their bellies with nutritious homegrown food. Even though it’s bittersweet, I encourage you all to look back on this year of gardening and share your challenges and triumphs with us here in the replies. First timers or Old timers, we would love to hear what you grew, what you loved, what was a waste of time and what you'll change for 2021. Just for fun we'll have a drawing! 3 winners will be chosen at random from the replies and will receive 2 free 6-packs of Wickman's Winter Wonder pansies! Happy reminiscing!

"Scratch and Dent" Mums just $2.00! Did you know that the absolute favorite food of groundhogs is garden mum centers? Neither did we!! We have a small number of lightly nibbled, misshapen, or bloomed out mums that would make a great addition to your landscape to add fall color in 2021. The majority are red or bronze (our groundhog’s favorite colors) in the 8" pot. Normally $9.98, these are a steal if you're looking to invest in your landscape for next year.
