The Harris Institute mourns the loss of Robert Cryer, a true warrior in the field of international law and justice. https://sites.law.wustl.edu//har/in-memoriam-robert-cryer/
Today, on December 10th, we commemorate UN Human Rights Day, which celebrates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Last month, as part of the Harris Institute’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, the Institute bestowed its 2020 World Peace Through Law Award upon Patricia Viseur Sellers, Special Advisor for Gender for the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. The World Peace Through Law Award is bestowed upon an individual who, by his or her work and writings, has considerably advanced the rule of law and thereby contributed to world peace. Professor Sellers delivered an exceptional keynote address that shines a light on a way forward for victims of atrocities. You can view her keynote address and the complete program here: https://vimeo.com/488963507/25a9ab69ec
Attention second-year and third-year WashU Law students! The Harris Institute is seeking research assistants for our Gun Violence and Human Rights Initiative. This is a part-time position that will begin January 1st and will last 6 months, with a possibility of extension. The deadline to apply is December 23. Interested individuals are invited to send their resume, cover letter, writing sample, and an unofficial transcript to Ms. Tabitha Crawford ([email protected]), with copies to Ms. Madaline George ([email protected]).
A side event on the International Expert Review of the ICC will take place tomorrow, December 8, from 5 to 7pm CET and 11am to 1pm EST. Professor Leila Sadat will be speaking alongside other global experts in what promises to be a thought-provoking panel. The event is co-sponsored by the ABA Center for Human Rights, Open Society Justice Initiative, Human Rights Watch, and FIDH, as well as the governments of Lichtenstein, Sierra Leone, Spain, and Switzerland.
The Harris Institute's Leila Sadat took part in the Robert H. Jackson Center's Tea Time yesterday. The webinar featured a panel discussion of a handful of the global issues of justice and the rule of law and considered how those manifest themselves on a local level. Topics included human rights, gun violence, and how local communities can join in promoting human rights. You can watch the webinar now!
We look forward to this morning's discussion on The Likely Trajectory of Global Governance after the U.S. Elections: A Comparative Perspective. Register below if you have not already done so!
