Happy 4th of July everyone! Have a safe 4th!
The calves are enjoying this nice evening!
We've had several people ask and we're sold out of beef for this spring. We are already working to have beef available for next spring though! It's a great feeling to have your own supply of beef in the freezer, especially in these crazy times! Thank you to everyone for your business and we look forward to talking beef with you next year!
Yesterday we turned the cows and calves out onto the wheat. Every year after harvest we like to plant a cover crop to feed our cows on that following spring. By doing this we give our pastures a chance to grow for the upcoming summer. They sure do love the wheat
It's been a pretty nasty week weather wise, but this little fella seems happy enough! Born on Wednesday
Had our first two calves of the season! Now we are egarly awaiting the arrival of the others. It's the best time of the year
Looks like spring is on its way!
Today's the day! Go Chiefs!!!!!
We always shoot to calve in the spring starting in March, but everyone knows that it's always a guessing game on when they will actually arrive. It is always amazing to be able to witness a birth of one of your calves. Calving season will be here before we know it
With the last cold spell we had, we had a waterer freeze up. When it's down in the single digits, the weather men tell you to stay inside, but for farmers that's not always an option. We have to make sure our livestock are fed and watered no matter what it's like outside. When the waterer freezes, we have to heat a lot of water, put it in a big cooler, take the waterer apart (bare handed) and start pouring the hot water on the valve and line until we get water flowing through everything again... Sometimes plans get cancelled or we're late to this or that because of these little unforseen problems, but our livestock come first. And we're doing what we love. It truly takes a family effort to keep everything going on a farm!
Feeding the girls some breakfast this winter morning...with a couple top hands!
Cover crops are up and growing! The green plants you see are cereal rye, turnips, and radishes. The seed was flown on 2 weeks ago with an airplane into these standing soybeans. We'll cut the beans then the cover crops will come up and provide some excellent forage to run our cows on this fall and winter. Next spring we'll kill the cover crops and plant soybeans again and put the cows in their summer pasture. The cover also helps to prevent erosion on the crop ground and keeps the soil healthy. A win-win for the cows and the crop ground!
We're about to dive in!
