A short story from a experience at whatsoever. Whatsoever Community Center: A Life-Changing Experience My siblings and I grew up a block from Whatsoever Community Center in the 1940’s and 1950’s. We walked to Whatsoever at least once a day for some activity. There were many options to keep kids involved in supervised programs for a minimal fee or free. My sisters and I took tap dancing where my mother played the piano for the classes and we were able to participate. There wer...e square dancing and acrobats, cooking and sewing classes plus art lessons provided by the KC Art Institute. The Game Room provided ping-pong and pool tables to play. Mother volunteered as a supervisor in the Game Room. We participated in swimming at Ford/Sheffield Park where there were tennis courts and baseball diamonds. My sisters and I were members of Campfire Girls and attended Camp Lake-of-the-Woods at Swope Park plus Camp Rancho Red Bird near Warrensburg, Missouri. My brothers made soapbox derby cars for annual races at Swope Park. They also participated in the Gold Gloves boxing program held in the basement of the center. There were so many opportunities given to us that we otherwise would not have been able to have access to attend. We went on many field trips like bowling, the American Royal, swimming at The Groves, carefree days at Fairyland Park as well as attending hockey games and musical performances. My first "real" job at age 10 or 11 was to clean the apartment at the center where Director Sam Doughty lived. My pay was $1.00. The school nurse sent us to Whatsoever for the dental college clinic. My parents attended adult dance parties and we all joined in for chili suppers and other family activities. We kids attended Teen Town every week. Whatsoever was a safe place for my family. My father was unstable and did not work regularly. As a result, we received access to underwear and socks along with many more personal items from their clothes closet. Most importantly, Whatsoever connected Mother with services that provided an overnight place to stay for her and us kids for relief from the domestic violence occurring in our home. This is an incomplete list of all the activities available to me and my family. For us, Whatsoever was our "home-away-from-home." We have many cherished memories. I am forever grateful that Whatsoever was there for me and my family. Written date: April 25, 2020 See more
