The 1906 Investigation of George E. Ladd, Director of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy Tomorrow, October 20, at 1 p.m.... Dr. Larry Gragg, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus of History at Missouri University of Science & Technology, hosts a conversation about George E. Ladd, the strong-willed director of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM) at the turn of the twentieth century. Drawing from his October 2020 article in the Missouri Historical Review, Gragg explores how Ladd's determination to transform MSM into a first-rate technological institution created powerful enemies that led to a contentious investigation. It's free, but you have to register.

The Webb City Historical Society and Cardinal Detecto will hold a tour and program at the newly renovated Cardinal Building, formerly known as the Royal Building this Thursday (9/26) at 5:30 pm. Guests should enter by the 102 East Daugherty entrance. Built beginning in 1891, the building recently underwent a $2 million renovation and now serves as the scale company's international headquarters. Webb City historian Jeanne Newby will present a program on the building's past us...es which, during the last 125+ years, has included over 50 businesses such as the Morris Opera House, the Electric Ball Room, Huey's Department Store, and The Royal Furniture Store. Light refreshments will be served. The tour and program are free to current members of the historical society and their guests. The public is welcome to attend by joining the society. 2019 dues are $10 per person or $15 per family (discounted from $15/$25 respectively since it's late in the year) and may be paid at the door. For more information, contact Eileen Nichols at 417 483-8139. Photo of the building in its early days courtesy of Jeanne Newby.
