It has come to our attention that our Volunteers that was going to open today are unable to reach the Museum due to the weather so we will be officially closing today. We will reevaluate for Saturday. We sincerely apologize for the constant changing our minds but sometimes you need to change them a few times before coming to a final decision. Y’all be safe and have a great day.

Luna Museum Spotlight 2/17/2021 Submitted By David Bollinger ... Capt. George William Stivers, Jr. (1920-1945) was born at Piedmont. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, having graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1942. He was cited for gallantry in the South Pacific, Guadalcanal in 1942 and Tarawa in 1943. He was General J.C. Smith's Aide de Camp and in 1944 he became an air cadet. That same year he received his wings from the Corpus Christi NAS. He had 374.7 flight hours, 579 in Avengers. He was aboard the FT-117 plane that was part of the infamous Flight 19 squadron that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle on December 5, 1945, while on a training mission out of a Naval Base in Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale. An early 20th century teddy bear used by Stivers and his siblings (ca. 1910 through the 1920’s) is among the many items on display at the Wayne County Historical Society’s Luna Museum. The museum, located at 108 East Elm at Piedmont, is open Wednesday’s and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The historical society encourages everyone to visit the museum and the Payton Memorial Library located within the museum. The society also encourages everyone to honor and memorialize their ancestors with donations of any items that may add distinction to the museum. Those wanting more information may contact museum volunteers at 573-223-2204.
