Being a first-generation student means more to me than just being the first person in my family to earn a college degree. Being first-gen makes me even more grateful for the opportunity I had to pursue my education. I am proud to be a first-generation student and you should be to. Going to college was one of the best and most challenging decisions I ever made. I remember stepping on campus with so much excitement and so many questions. I know that being a college student is ...hard, and being a first-gen student is hard. However, I also know each student I have the pleasure of interacting with at WashU is capable of overcoming those challenges and earning their degree. For all of my degrees (and sometimes even today), I suffered with imposter syndrome. I want you to know that I believe in you and I am here to cheer you on each semester. I am proud to be a first-generation student, and I am proud of you too! I can’t wait to cheer you on as you walk the stage at graduation! - Ashleigh Goedereis, #McKelveyEngineering Assistant Dean for Student Advising #WashUfirstgen #firstgen #firstgeneration

Continuing First Generation Celebration Week with Sharniece Holland, PhD, Lecturer for Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science: "As a first generation college student/faculty member, I think about my community as well as my discipline. My presence on campus is to help bridge the gap of first generations students by equipping them with social capital and insight into the STEM field/college experience, and validating the experiences of the unique population of first generation students." #WashUfirstgen #firstgen #firstgeneration

Engineers in the Community was originally created in the wake of the Ferguson Uprising by Sandra Matteucci, Director and Senior Lecturer at the McKelvey School of Engineering Communication Center, with seed funding from the Gephardt Institute. To address challenges of the moment, students will continue to learn from community organizations, albeit remotely, and will work with community organizations on projects that will advance their missions.
