Spray Foam Can Stop More than Heat, Air and Moisture. Most know that spray polyurethane foam serves as an excellent barrier material for heat, air and moisture when used in building enclosures. At a specified minimum thickness of about 1 for closed-cell foam and 3.5 to 5.5 for open-cell foam, SPF is considered an air-impermeable material necessary for air-barrier systems. Closed-cell SPF at a thickness of 1.0 to 1.5 serves as a Class II vapor retarder required by building codes in cold climates. Finally, SPF provides a thickness-dependent insulation R-value to control heat conduction, typically R3.6/inch for open cell foam and R6.0-7.0 for closed cell foam.
