My statement on the potential threat of protest/riots/insurrection and states’ Capitols this week: I have living relatives who were threatened, harassed and beaten going to vote.... I have living relatives who were pelted with rocks walking to/ from school. We had session March 2020. This office stands in full support of the student, parent, and admonishes Ritenour School District for having deployed an armed police officer to a private residence unannounced to discuss state and federally protected student information. As a certified teacher and school counselor, I am absolutely mortified the district would find (or even test) such an approach as appropriate or effective. What will not be happening on my watch is the criminalization and intimidation of ac...ademically struggling students and their families EVER, but particularly during an unfamiliar and trying time. Further, I will personally be looking into if this course of action constitutes a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) violation contending there was no reason for the police officer to have been privy to the student’s grade; failing a course is NOT a crime, or does it call for intervention by a municipal peace officer.
