Online Estate Planning Can Lead to a DISASTER for Your Family! Last week I saw a Will that was put together on the Internet. Unsurprisingly, it had several major concerns. There are no contingent beneficiaries listed (important since the sole Beneficiary is now a former spouse), the Executor/Beneficiary signed as a witness, and there was no Self-Proving Affidavit. This estate, worth close to one million dollars, is controlled by a Will that they probably got for free onlin...e. Don't try to create your own estate planning documents, and don't trust anything online unless you get it directly from a lawyer. A lot of the online legal document companies will tell you that you still need to take their document to a lawyer to look over it & have state-specific language added. If you have to go to a lawyer anyway, why waste time and money with the online company? You might be very intelligent and/or educated, but you probably only know enough about the law to be dangerous. Too many families have had major issues because a parent didn't want to pay a lawyer to help them.
