Weekly Update from the Greater Clinton-Area Chamber of Commerce by David Lee: It’s going on right now and we’ve had our first winner! Congratulations to Jodi B...illings. One of the promotions that the Clinton Chamber is doing during the Holidays is now underway. You will find out more about Receipt to Receive on the Clinton Chamber’s Facebook page, but I can tell you that it involves shopping at businesses that are members of our Chamber, bringing or emailing your receipt to the Depot and then waiting to see if you are winner of Chamber gift certificates each week. The big money will be given away Christmas Eve. Your chance to win is each Monday. You can bring in receipts Monday through Friday for purchases that were made that week and then we give away our prize the following Monday. We are open Monday through Friday from 8am until 4:30pm. You can also email those receipts with the business, date and phone number to [email protected] or [email protected]. So shop local, gather those receipts, bring them by the Chamber, and you may be a winner. And we are done. Joyce and I would like to thank Jack Wetzel, Andy Ford, Robert Mendenhall, Dan Wallace and Bretta Plumlee for their help last night in re-bulbing the snowflakes that will line 2nd and Ohio streets and around the Square this Holiday Season. As always, a huge thank you to Elite Laundry for letting us store the lights in their building all year long. Now, it's up to Evergy and Jerry's Pest Management to put up the lights so they are ready to be turned on Nov. 27th. Thanks in advance to those folks. We gathered Thursday aft. at Treva's Place at 901 East Ohio St. to congratulate her for five years of doing business in Clinton. Treva Jones offers skin care, facials, ion cleanse, salt therapy room, reflexology and so much more. All services are provided by a Missouri Licensed Aesthetician. Call Treva at 660-890-1102. What’s good for the Community? Making sure non-drivers are able to access healthy food and connect to everyday locations so that they can live full, complete lives. This includes school age children, senior citizens and those with disabilities. What’s good for the economy? This group is trying to prioritize low cost/high impact improvements that will benefit everyone in the City. For information on how to help them identify problem areas on streets, sidewalks and more that you come across daily in town, just use the app https://arcg.is/mjDzH Make sure you use Clinton, MO, USA as the location and then you can report. The next Presidential election will be happening in just a few days, so this is probably a good time to talk politics. Did you know that in 1924 one of Henry C...ounty’s own ran for President of the United States? If that is a surprise, let us tell you one better! His running mate was a woman, the first legally qualified female candidate to run for the vice-presidency following the passage of the 19th Amendment. Herman Preston Faris (H.P. as he was known to his family and friends) ran for President on the Prohibition ticket with Marie Caroline Brehm running as his Vice President. Sadly, their slogan Be Fair With Faris and Brave with Brehm only helped them receive a little over 55,000 votes or 0.19% of the vote. H.P. was born December 25, 1858 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He and his family moved to Clinton, Missouri in 1867. Early in Faris’s adult life he proved that he was quite an entrepreneur dealing mainly in banking and the real estate business. One of the things H.P. was involved in was the discovery of the Artesian White Sulphur Well located in the now Artesian Park on the southwest edge of Clinton. That is a story for another time. If you take a walk around Clinton’s beautiful square you can see a building that was the Brinkman-Faris Trust and Loan Building. The Faris Building was just east of the only 3 story building on the north side. While you are strolling take a moment to enjoy looking at the over twenty murals located on the square or within a block of the square. You can find three at the Henry County Museum's new WW & H Exchange building.

How many have heard about the Jesse James house just a few miles northeast of Clinton on YY Highway? Well, for all that have, we want to set the record straight.... The two beautiful homes that sat across the road from one another were really Bronaugh homes. It is true that Frank and Wal Bronaugh had met the James brothers, as they were both in the Confederate Army in the War Between the States. At the end of the war, Jesse and Frank stayed with the lifestyle they had learned during the war while the Bronaughs came back to their homeplace and became well-respected citizens. It is believed that the James brothers would spend the night with the Bronaughs if they happened to be passing through the county. Neighbors said that occasionally a strange horse or two would appear in the Bronaugh's pasture and in a few days would be gone again. Warren C. Bronaugh (nicknamed Wal) fought in the Battle of Lone Jack. After the battle, Wal and another soldier from his unit were separated from the others. Wal was lucky enough to come across other Confederate soldiers who told them where they could reunite with their unit. When the Younger gang was captured after a bank robbery and put in prison in Minnesota, Wal's friend, Frank James, asked for his help. Frank was not allowed to go to Minnesota because of his previous activity in that state. Wal made the trip, hoping to get a parole for a man he did not know. When Wal met Cole Younger, he realized that Cole had been the Confederate soldier who had pointed him in the right direction after the Battle of Lone Jack. Cole probably saved Wal Bronaugh's life and Wal wanted to do the same for him. See more
