Ethiopia is new to the emerald scene with recent discoveries of great quality gemstones with a rare vivid fire, thanks to high vanadium content, the element that gives emeralds a deep, rich green hue. ... Most of the world's emeralds (90%) come from Colombia, where the presence of vanadium is lower and thus the stones are not as stunning. Ethiopia is also a more socially responsible source for emeralds. The Colombian emerald trade has been linked to violence and drug trafficking, and a recurring series of "green wars" in Colombia between the billionaire emerald capos and drug traffickers linked to Pablo Escobar. At Vinca we literally go to the ends of the earth to establish relationships with small mining families doing things right. Given Ethiopia is still fairly new to the emerald scene there has not yet been much investment in infrastructure and most mining is still done by hand and trading at a discount to "global" emerald prices.
