Join us in thanking Professor Kandice Johnson for her dedication and service to Mizzou Law students, faculty and staff. The traditional walk after her last in-person lecture had to be adapted for COVID safety. Luckily we had a sunny and warm (though windy) November day to honor her. Asked for some thoughts about her time at Mizzou Law, she shared the following: "Professor Hunvald was a Socratic professor. I took every class he taught. I received my worst grades in law school... in his classes. I am not sure if I ever heard him utter a declarative sentence. He only posed questions. I learned everything I really needed as a lawyer from him. As a faculty member when my class had not gone well I would return to my office, rest my head on my fist, stare into space, and tell Professor Hunvald I would do better next time. When class went well, my students were full of questions, we analyzed tough cases, we recognized the sadness that accompanies the criminal justice system, they disagreed with respect and civility, we laughed, and they challenged each other and me. Then, I would experience a type of communal connection that I have only experienced in the classroom. To my students who shared with me the good classes - and the bad, I cannot thank you enough. Your desire to do good was universal and I am proud to have been your teacher. And to Professor Hunvald- you not only taught me how to be a lawyer, you taught me how to live a life." Thank you Professor Johnson ... you will be missed!
