Hi, this is Dr. Belew with Union Hill Animal Hospital! We seem to be experiencing an increase in "kennel cough" in downtown, midtown and the surrounding suburbs of Kansas City. I never want our fur babies under the weather! I am sharing important information on how this happens and what we, as concerned pet parents, can do to slow it down. It is important to note, there is still no evidence that our fur babies can contract COVID-19. They can be fomites and carry it on t...heir fur if you have been sick. Additional information can be found at: www.avma.org/resources-t/animal-health-and-welfare/covid-19 Upper respiratory infection in our fur babies is referred to as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD) complex. Our Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccines provide protection; however, they cannot cover every potential bacteria/virus in CIRD. These vaccines also lessen the risk of pneumonia and lower the amount of contagious bacteria/virus spread. Nose to nose contact with other dogs is the main way CIRD spreads- hence those that go to daycare, dog parks & are socializer's (your fur baby can't resist kissing others!) are most susceptible. The CIRD has evolved so that our fur babies can spread this to each before they even show us symptoms, which is how it can spread so rapidly. It is very important that if your fur baby is showing any symptoms (didn't eat breakfast, wasn't as quick to go for a walk, has a cough or fever), that you keep them home that day. If those symptoms persist longer than 24 hours or worsen, you need to contact us. We can determine if any testing is needed and the best course of treatment (if detected early, many just need a little medication to go home). The good news is that with appropriate veterinary care and TLC, your fur baby will be back to their mischievous ways in no time! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call us 816-931-4930 or email us at [email protected]. You can also stop by and see us at our Mobile Clinic at Bar K Dog Bar. We can answer questions, update vaccinations & much more! Visit www.uhanimalhospital.com to see available dates and times.
We wish everyone a safe & healthy July 4th! We will be closed Saturday & re-open normal hours Monday.

I wanted to let you know that we will be closed Monday, May 25th, for Memorial Day. We appreciate those who have served and say thank you to those who we have had to say goodbye to.... If your fur baby needs emergency care while we are closed, please call BluePearl Overland Park at 913-642-9563. I would also like to share a quick COVID 19 update. For both your safety and that of our staff, we will continue to wear masks, maintain our current disinfecting protocols, follow the CDC's guidelines for social distancing and offer Curbside Service. We are not requiring that you wear a mask, but we recommend you join us in this great new fashion statement. Thank you, have a great weekend!

Hi, this is Dr. Belew with Union Hill Animal Hospital. With the concern & increasing spread of COVID-19, the new novel coronavirus, I felt it was very important to share with you what we currently know regarding our fur babies. It's important to note, at this time, it does not appear that our fur babies can contract or carry the novel COVID-19 coronavirus. They can, however, be a fomite for transmission. What does that mean? If someone who is sick coughs or sneezes on yo...ur kiddo, you can pick up COVID-19 on your hands when you pet or snuggle them. You can then accidentally pass it to yourself. The current guidelines for our fur babies is pretty similar to the guidelines for us: 1. Be careful around large crowds of people 2. Be careful around other fur babies if you feel ill or sick 3. Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from your face 4. Keep approximately 2-4 weeks of food and necessary medication stocked in case of home quarantine We are taking serious precautions at Union Hill Animal Hospital to protect our Doctors and Staff so we can remain open to take care of your fur babies. What can you do to help? 1. If you are feeling ill and your fur baby needs to be seen- please call us at 816-931-4930. We have several options we can discuss to ensure your kiddo is seen as soon as possible. 2. If you think your fur baby has been exposed, please give them a bath. Please do not use disinfectants or hand sanitizer on them. We have several great, soap free shampoo options (including samples!). Soap free is important so that you do not accidentally remove your flea/tick products. Like washing your hands, the mechanical action of a bath will remove the virus. We are learning about this virus everyday. We will share any new updates as they become available.
