According to statistics, St Louis has more police officers than needed for a city of its size in comparison to comparable sized cities in the USA. Therefore, t...he permanent reduction in the size of the city's police force by formally removing the 200 permanently vacant slots for police officers that is usually kept in the city budget is warranted. The budget change is just a reflection of what already is the case. Moreover, you never see any police officers when you are driving through the city. What you see are cars running red lights and stop signs with total indifference to being ticketed since they know there are no police officers to be seen or doing their jobs.

WHY DO BLACK VOTERS VOTE DEMOCRAT? BECAUSE DEMOCRATIC PUBLIC POLICIES EARNED THE BLACK VOTE I had to repost this with some updates after reading many knuckle h...ead posts asserting that black folks won't get anything by electing Biden as President. The most asinine assertion coming out of the mouths of some black folks is that Black voters vote for Democrats and get nothing in return. That is preposterous. When Lincoln was elected President, there were four political parties that fielded candidates The election results were as follows: Political Party Presidential Nominee Electoral College Republican Abraham Lincoln 180 Democratic (Southern) John Breckenridge 72 Constitutional Union John Bell 39 Democratic (Northern) Stephen Douglas 12 Note then that contrary to popular belief, the Democratic party was split into Northern and Southern branches and thus was not solely the party of the south, though there were a large number of Democrats who were "Southern" Democrats. At the time of the civil war, it was primarily the Republican party that fought to save the Union and against slavery. After the civil war it was the Republican party that passed the 13th amendment freeing the slaves, the 14th amendment guaranteeing due process and equal protection of law to the newly freed slaves, and the 15th amendment giving black men the right to vote. It was a Republican controlled congress that passed the civil rights bill of 1866. Thus, as the Republican party was the party of Lincoln, and supportive of the freed black slaves, 95% of black men voted Republican after the civil war. With the passage of the amendment giving women the right to vote, 95% of black female voters also voted Republican. There was a great depression that impacted the black voters and led them to eventually begin to cast votes for a Democratic President, Franklin Roosevelt, because he put the country back to work and instituted economic programs that brought black folks food on the table and jobs. But still they cast a majority of their votes for the Republican candidates. President Truman, a Democrat, became President when President Roosevelt died in office. Truman desegregated the military and had a civil rights plank in his platform when he ran for President, speaking out in favor of black civil rights. Black folks liked that, and Truman was able to get a sizeable number of black votes. The Southern Democrats split from the Democratic party and ran their own candidate for President against Truman, Strom Thurman. Eisenhower, a Republican, who won receiving a majority of the black vote, followed Truman into the Presidency. The 1954 school desegregation decision was being resisted so Eisenhower sent the troops to protect black children going to newly desegregated schools; so black folks maintained their Republican leaning when voting. John Kennedy, a Democrat, while seeking the Presidency came to Martin Luther King’s defense when he was being attacked, called Coretta King to give her encouragement when Martin Luther King was in jail, so a slight majority of black voters voted for Kennedy when he ran against Nixon. Lynden Johnson, a Texas Democrat, became President upon Kennedy’s death in office. During his tenure in office, a Democratic controlled congress passed the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, the Anti Housing Discrimination Act, and the Public Accommodations Act which persuaded a majority of black folks to vote Democrat, when Johnson ran for President. But still, when Nixon ran to succeed Johnson, Hubert Humphrey with a strong civil rights platform headed the Democratic ticket, Nixon garnered about 35% of the black vote, because black folks still had an affinity for the party of Lincoln, the Republican party; and the Republicans were voting for the civil rights legislation along with the Democrats. Keep in mind that the "Southern" Democrats were voting against civil rights legislation, but those Democrats outside of the south were voting for civil rights bills and thus a majority of Democrats were supporting civil rights legislation along with the Republicans, who at that time were voting for black folks civil rights. Moreover, keep in mind that prior to the passage of the voting rights act, black voters who were voting Democratic as well as Republican, all resided outside of the South and were not experiencing white violence and oppression of those black folks who lived in the South and were being denied the right to vote. Permanent change came first with the Republican nominee, Ford, having little appeal to black voters, when he ran against the Democrat, Jimmy Carter, who despite being the Governor of Georgia had a strong civil rights record and thus appealed to black voters. Ronald Reagan’s southern strategy, which was to court the white south with anti-black rhetoric and appeals ran black voters totally away from the Republican party. Beginning with Johnson, Black voters saw Democratic Presidents appointing black folks to Judgeships and high-level Executive branch Cabinet positions, Ambassadors, and Boards and Commissions. They saw black Democratic candidates being elected to Congress, Mayors, State Legislatures, and Aldermanic and Council positions in municipalities and counties. At the same time, they saw the party of Lincoln move to the right, being in the forefront of opposition to extension of the voting rights act and other measures designed to give equality to black Americans. Black folks saw the Democrats nominate and elect a black man the President of the USA. Black folks saw the Republicans nominate and elect one of the most racist and divisive Presidents to ever hold that office, Donald "the racist" Trump. During his tenure in office, Trump has appointed almost 200 federal judges and not one of them is black. Yet he suddenly comes up with a "platinum plan." Muck that subterfuge. The proof is in his record in office, having failed to appoint black folks to much of anything, having not a single plan or program over the 4 years he has been in office to aid and lift black folks out of poverty, having actively aided and abetted racist attacks upon black and brown people and having appointed racist and anti black judges to the federal court. So for anyone to say, Black folks vote Democratic blindly, getting nothing for their vote. All I have to say in response to that is, you can't be serious!

In hindsight, we were on the wrong Page. Dr. Page IS bad medicine. He can't be trusted. He is a fair weather ally who uses his allies to advance his personal career and then fails to support them in the time of their need. Furthermore, he is all talk and no action. Endorsing and supporting him was a big mistake. We shall give serious consideration to Paul Berry or Betsey Mitchell as County Executive. We are disappointed at having been on the wrong Page. I definitely won't be in 2022.
