How does wearing a mask protect against #COVID-19? COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. #Masks cover the nose and mouth and are intended to help prevent people who have the #virus from transmitting it to others, even if they do not have symptoms. #CDC recommends... wearing cloth masks in #public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Masks are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control. If everyone wears a mask in congregate settings, the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 can be reduced. Kelly walked four miles to the Save our Sons virtual direct hiring fair to be interviewed for employment opportunities with Schnucks. When he arrived he needed clothing for the interview. Kelly worked with staff to get a complete outfit to put his best foot forward during the interview process. We are happy to report he was hired. In addition to his new employment opportunity he was also able to take advantage of on site wraparound services. He was offered utility assista...nce as well as opening up a bank account with Alltru Credit Union to receive his paychecks via direct deposit. #ULMovement #ULSOS #ULSaveoursons #SaveOurSons #SOS #Jobs #Nonprofit #GiveBack #Volunteer #Donate #HelpingOthers #Education #DoGood #Philanthropy #MakeADifference #Inspire #Volunteering #Causes #CommunityService #Community #MyCommunity

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. opened its newest community empowerment center November 12, 2020. The North Spring Community Empowerment Center is located at 929 North Spring Avenue in the city’s Covenant Blu/Grand Center neighborhood. We are grateful for the partnerships that allowed us to bring the building back online, said Michael P. McMillan, Urban League President and CEO. This is a prime location allowing us to provide critical, empowering busines...s and community services right in the heart of the City. The North Spring Community Empowerment Center will house primary offices for The Heartland St. Louis Black Chamber of Commerce and a business incubator operated by the Chamber. The Urban League’s Department of Public Safety and Community Response with its 28-member staff will also co-locate in the building. The Public Safety department will manage the Serving Our Streets outreach initiative, the gun violence de-escalation and conflict resolution programs, the Federation of Block Units, and The Neighborhood Healing Network, from the new location. The building renovations were completed as a public private partnership between the City of St. Louis, The Centene Charitable Foundation, and Home State Health.
