This month we celebrate Black History Month and shine the spotlight on Sarah Boone. As a dressmaker and daughter of enslaved parents, she improved the ironing board design in 1892. Even today, the ironing board remains an indispensable household item. The original design in 1858 was a horizontal wooden block. Sarah’s design was a narrower, curved design that made ironing women’s clothing easier (tailor made for the corsets that were popular in the era and could slip into slee...ves and allowed for moving a garment without it becoming wrinkled). Her improved design was also padded and collapsible for easy storage. She hailed from an area where it was illegal to teach African Americans to read and write. She overcame this disadvantage in her late 40’s and applied for her patent for a new and improved ironing board a few years later. Thank you, Sarah, for your ingenuity and courage. #UCPHeartland #UCwhatisPossible #HeartlandStrong #BlackHistoryMonth2021
