As we reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr. today, take a look at 8th grader, Nashaun Bate's monologue, "Young Black Boy,." Nashuan wrote the monologue for Kelly Wehmeyer's Theater Arts class. He was one of the winners of the National BIPOC Monologue Competition and, his monologue will be published as part of a special collection. In remembrance of Dr. King, we encourage all of our students to continue to share their voice and truth. Lift every voice and sing!
When students can't come to the library, Brittany Woods Librarian Kelly Werthmuller takes the library to the students! Library books are available for check-out in the cafeteria on select days, and for pick-up and classroom delivery at any time.
We are delighted to announce Dr. Natalie Parks, UCHS Class of '95, is the recipient of the 2021 Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit Award presented by the University City Board of Education. The award is given annually to a University City resident who embodies the spirit of Dr. King and exemplifies a life committed to community service and social justice. Happy New Year and welcome back! This is just a reminder that our libraries are OPEN for virtual checkout (we have thousands of eBooks and audiobooks) and online ordering with in-building pick-up. Each of our libraries has their own system for check out, so please contact your school librarian for details, and make a resolution to read more in the new year!
As we acknowledge Indigenous Peoples' Day today, consider sharing picture books about Native Americans written by Native Americans with your children. Here's a great list... https://www.rebekahgienapp.com/native-americans/
Joe Lion knows that online school is different and challenging, but it's also really important. Students taught him to do his work, keep his desk organized and speak up when he needs help. Share Joe's story with your kids because Lions Love to Learn! Joe Lion is the new mascot at the School District of University City helping the staff and students stay healthy. He has lots of ideas and tips as part of our Health of a Lion campaign. Do you have any great ideas for Joe? Send him a note to [email protected] and he'll write back! Learn more about Joe Lion at www.ucityschools.org/joelion.
