How do we recognise negative plantar angles (NPLA)? What are the different grades of NPLA? Recently I have been asked to describe what to look for with NPLA an...d outline the grades that I have mentioned which have been extrapolated from Floyd (2010). Floyd (2010) stated negative palmar angles as The palmar angle (PA) is negative, thus sole depth under the tip (SDT) is greater than the sole depth under the wing (SDW) of P3. The distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint is hyperextended, bringing the extensor process of P3 closer to the dorsal articular margin of the second phalanx (P2). P3 is displaced dorsally in relation to P2 (ie, dorsal slippage of P3). With extension of the DIP joint and dorsal slippage of P3, the navicular bone is drawn proximally, toward the palmar surface of P2. I have extrapolated the same for negative plantar angles. Negative plantar angles are essentially created by a complete collapse of the heel and caudal hoof structures. These feet get caught in negative cycles as this morphology affects the forces acting on the foot, affects proprioceptive input and causes pain resulting in adaptive posture. All of these create perpetuating cycles. The hoof needs to be taken beyond a certain threshold to enable positive morphology. Below are some infographics showing the grading system and some examples of my treatments. We will be discussing the postural links in further depth in the march webinar with Dr Tabor. See the events page.

Todays morning stables ended with a Foot Mapping refresher session with Alex and apprentices Alex and Kendell. Foot mapping is great tool to help visualise hoof... balance and highlight external landmarks that we can use to assist in both the trim and shoe placement. It's a process that as farriers we carry out every time we pick up the feet but often it helps to draw on the lines every now and again. Thank you @kayleighflower for the brilliant photography. @alexridgewayfarrier @alexevans798 @kendell.norris @laurence.ridgeway #farrier #newmarket #horseracing #apprenticeship #horseshoeing #hoofcare See more
