Installed the power steering fluid reservoir.
F.Y.I. for your D.I.Y. - When doing a timing chain replacement on a Ford 5.4 liter engine whether it is a 2 valve 3 valve or 4 valve the timing marks on the chain are to be used as a guide for getting the engine in time. For those people whom believe that the timing marks on the chains and sprockets should line up every other rotation of the crankshaft please understand that they will not. The marks will eventually line back up but not every two rotations of the crankshaft.... On the 5.4 Liter 3 valve engine it would take 116* rotations of the crankshaft or 58* rotations of the camshaft for the marks on the chain to line back up. This is due to the length of the chains VS the amount of links making contact with the phasers and crankshaft sprocket. Note that the four valve engines would have two additional timing chains connecting the dual overhead camshafts that are in the newer style 5.4 Liter engines. Back to the 5.4 timing just because the timing marks do not line up on the chains and the sprockets The phasing of the crankshaft VS the phasing of the camshafts would be in time. Meaning that when the crankshaft keyway for the harmonic balancer is pointing toward cylinder 1 or about the 10 O'clock position the piston should be at TDC and the Valves that control the intake of fuel and air should be at about the 10-11 O'clock position as well as the R on the passenger side phaser should be at the 11-12 O'clock position. Otherwise what I am trying to say is that if the chains, phasers, guides, tensioners, and tensioner guides are installed correctly and the timing marks line up when you install both chains and both phasers with the crankshaft timing gear. Then you would have nothing to worry about, the engine will be in time with the phasing of the engine even though the marks on the chains do not line up the way most people think they should. I hope this helps those out trying to tackle the timing chains in their 5.4 Liter engine. Thank you for being a part of Tubbs Automotive. See more
