This poor box turtle came in today. Someone sadly painted her shell with many coats and colors of nail polish. Although made of keratin like human fingernails, ...a turtle or tortoise shell allows chemicals to leech into the tortoise’s body. Many paints and nail polishes contain chemicals that are toxic. This can make an animal ill or even cause death. Paint or nail polish prevents tortoises and turtles from absorbing vitamins from the sun, and it also destroys their natural camouflage. It is absolutely NOT safe to paint a turtle’s or tortoise’s shell as it poses many dangers and can ultimately be fatal. This turtle has had the nail polish removed, but she has a lot of damage to her shell. She was very dehydrated and is also very thin. We are hopeful she will recover with time, proper nutrition, and some healing UV rays. Please everyone, the point of this post is to educate and inform. We are confident this wasn’t done to be intentionally cruel, but rather by someone who just didn’t know better. Hopefully once people KNOW better they will DO better.
