Good morning. This Monday morning I am going to recognize the birthday of a gentleman whom my friend Aaron Perlut will certainly appreciate. Born in Chicago, he... worked as a riveter on airplanes during WW2. Following the war he was the mascot for Mercury Records, complete with winged hat. Then in August of 1951 a showman named Bill Veeck decided to hire him for a job. On August 19, 1951, today's birthday boy walked to the plate, with the number 1/8 on his uniform, to pinch hit for Frank Saucier. Standing but 3 feet 7 inches he had a strike zone of but 1 1/2". The Tigers' pitcher, Bob Cain, actually threw two attempts at strikes, then gave up trying to hit the tiny strike zone. The batter walked on 4 pitches, and was promptly replaced with a pinch runner. That was his only plate appearance. He is one of only five players to reach base in one appearance without ever playing in the field. Or maybe only 4, as there is controversy as to whether Joe Cobb reached base or struck out in 1918. Anyway, today's celebrant had his moment in the sun. He is the shortest person to ever appear in a major league game. Just because of it's rarity his autograph is now worth more than Babe Ruth's. But on June 18, 1961, he was beaten while walking home from a bowling alley. Why or by who nobody knows. The coroner says that the cause of death was a heart attack, so perhaps the beating precipitated the heart attack. Bob Cain, the pitcher who had tried to strike him out 10 years before, was the only major leaguer to attend his funeral. So today I will indeed recognize the birthday of Eddie Gaedel, a man who had his 15 minutes of fame, and who was born on this day in 1925. Peace, and 23 skidoo. See more
