The CDC predicts one in four Latinx gay and bisexual cisgender men and one in two Black gay and bisexual cisgender men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. Trans people of color are also disproportionately impacted. Twenty-six percent of Latinx transgender women and almost half of Black transgender women in the United States are living with HIV today. The disproportionate impact of the HIV epidemic is directly rooted in structural racism and anti-Blackness. #ThriveHealthConnection #HIV #Racism #HeavyPrice

This Sunday, February 7, is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), a day to help stop HIV stigma and increase HIV prevention, testing, and treatment in Black communities. Even when we are physically apart during the pandemic, we all have a role to play in ending HIV. That’s why the 2021 NBHAAD theme is We’re in This Together. When we work to overcome barriers to HIV prevention, care, and treatment, we can stop HIV together!... #ThriveHealthConnection #HIV #Stigma #Prevention #NBHAAD

A new study published in Pediatrics links early gender-affirming medical care to better mental health outcomes. These findings are in line with those of similar studies. The Trevor Project’s 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health found a connection between early gender affirmation and lower rates of suicide attempts. #ThriveHealthConnection #MentalHealth #GenderAffirming #BetterOutcomes

As more research continues to emerge about how COVID-19 disproportionately impacts minorities, new findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that Hispanic laborers in food manufacturing and farming jobs are more likely to contract the coronavirus than people of other races and ethnicities in these workplaces. About 70% of employees who contracted the coronavirus in these work settings were Hispanic. #ThriveHealthConnection #COVID19 #Latinx #HealthEquity

Hopefully, most of you have voted, but if you haven’t, you must. And if you know someone who hasn’t, or can’t, help them out. We all have our own lives which take many forms, and can be reasons for not going the extra mile. Some of us have children. Some of us work more than one job. Some of us are homebound and lonely. Some of us may feel that we are insignificant, and that our voice won’t make a difference. Or, that we don’t follow politics, and aren’t familiar with the issues, so we don’t feel the need to vote. And some are frightened of the pandemic. Whatever your reason, please put it aside, and do whatever you can to exercise your right. #ThriveHealthConnection #VOTE #ExerciseYourRight

Having a low mood is commonespecially in these challenging timesbut people with HIV often experience more persistent feelings of sadness or depression, even under normal circumstances. Many aspects of living with HIV can contribute to depression, including fear of illness and death, loss of loved ones, survivor’s guilt, decreased self-esteem related to body changes, chronic pain, difficulty performing daily activities and struggles with stigma. #ThriveHealthConnection #ChallengingTimes #Depression

Issues of equity, inclusion and diversity have plagued the nation’s health care system. Providers of all walks are reaching deeper into the roots of disparities to understand barriers and expand care among underserved African American, Hispanic, Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities. While widespread data is scarce, available research indicates that the LGBTQ+ population is among those groups under-utilizing hospice care. #ThriveHealthConnection #BarriersToCare #Disparities #LGBTQ

During a very difficult time in our lives, we offer words of inspiration and comfort from Winnie the Pooh: Pooh woke up that morning, and, for reasons that he didn't entirely understand, couldn't stop the tears from coming. He sat there in bed, his little body shaking, and he cried, and cried, and cried. Amidst his sobs, the phone rang. ...Continue reading
