With its allocation of space, duration of occupancy, and caliber of both resident artists and studio patrons, the Studios Inc residency award has quickly become one of the more prestigious recognitions of artistic talent in Kansas City. In 2021, Studios Inc will welcome two more artists into the program: Lilly McElroy (Lawrence, KS) and Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado (Puerto Rico). Lilly McElroy is a mid-career artist and recent recipient of the Charlotte Street Studi...o Residency Program (2017-2019). The artistic projects she pursues are a reflection of her complex relationship with the American West and explores what it means to be an American in a time of diminished expectations. Her practice utilizes lens-based media and is highly concerned with the correlation between representation and reality as well as the medium’s ability to accurately convey information. Through these projects, she attempts to develop authentic ties to her own experiences, giving the cliché new and personal meaning. Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado is a mid-career artist and sculptor. Rodríguez-Delgado is concerned with the overlap between the technological landscape and built imaginary environments. He assumes the role of an artist-inventor who produces objects of an improvised nature. He is interested in the way these objects can be deployed as frameworks for speculative cultural identities and belief systems, and how they behave (or could behave) as units of cultural production. #contemporaryphotography #sculpture #artistresidency

Studios Inc Alum | Marcie Miller Gross I am interested in the weight of a place and the transcendence of a distilled moment. My sculpture, drawings and installations are often informed by the conditions of a place, the pitch of a roof, the depth of green of a forest, an earthen rubble wall. I make objects of materials with which I have an intimate visceral connection: industrial felt, wood, vellum, graphite. These distinct material associations relate to warmth, absor...ption, silence. I study repetition, mass and void, physicality and weight, compression and release, within an incremental means of building. These new works are graphite rubbings of utilitarian elements in my studio: cast iron radiators, wooden box beams and sheared slabs. My use of this technique, frottage, expresses notions of weightlessness, presence, and the marking of time. It is a tactile gesture of locating oneself within a place. This record is as direct as a photograph, and becomes a physical witness to a moment. These graphite recordings on vellum, connect ideas of landscape and memory, deconstructing and reconstructing a new sense of place. My interest lies in the contrast of the mechanical means of capturing an image by a camera, and the action of the hand. The immediacy and stillness of a photograph differs from the slow accumulative process of graphite moving across the surface of an object. The ghostly graphite marks from the industrial felt object draw parallels with the weight of the moment. They register stillness, movement, time and place. @marciemillergrossstudio Check out her upcoming exhibit at Haw Contemporary's Stockyards location this coming Friday. See more

I don’t know. Everywhere I go, everywhere I look, I am haunted. Something’s ending. I’ve felt it since Christmas. More and more too. 'This is ending', each place seems to say. We’re seeing that a low hum of anxiety kept us from ever touching the ground. From witnessing the miracle of our hand reaching out and breaking the picture plane of consciousness. The miracle of a conversation with someone worthy of our attention. The miracle of a lifetime of conversations. And now all... the conversations are too lateas though there would be something to do if only something could be done. - Robert Bingaman's t’s personal journal, February 25, 2020 Haw Contemporary announces Robert Bingaman's solo exhibition opening Friday, October 23 at their Stockyards location, running through November 26. Opening reception will be held this Friday from 5-8pm. Masks and social distancing will be required. #artexhibition #contemporarypainting See more
