The little boy in the red coat from the classic book "The Snowy Day" comes to life in an endearing production streaming online now for families and virtual field trips. Matt Stewart from FOX4 News Kansas City checked-in with actors/puppeteers Shawna Peña-Downing and Zachery Garner as they were preparing to launch the show online at Coterie Theatre, where Mesner Puppet Theater's production of The Snowy Day and other stories by Ezra Jack Keats was recently recorded. Celebrating... the magic and boundless possibilities of the first snowfall, this uplifting musical play about childhood joys is told through inventive puppetry and charming songs. The show features a collection of Keats’ stories Whistle for Willie, Goggles!, A Letter to Amy, and the Caldecott Award-winning, The Snowy Day. Sponsored by Compass Minerals - Plant Nutrition. You can help #savethecoterie by clicking qtego.net/donate/coterie.php or by texting STAGE to 74121. A donation of any size will help The Coterie bridge the gap until we can once again fill our theater with young people and families - many receiving their first introduction to the performing arts. Our first venture back on the mainstage will be The Snowy Day and other stories by Ezra Jack Keats, in a partnership to present Mesner Puppet Theater, a socially distanced holiday sh...ow with puppeteers and audience masked, the dialogue recorded and the puppetry live. For those who cannot see it live at Crown Center in person, it will also stream online for families and virtual field trips for classrooms. Thanks to KMBC 9 for chatting with our artistic director, Jeff Church, about how The Coterie is adapting to a new era of live performance with community support to create its most unique and imaginative season yet.

The Coterie is thrilled to partner with Lansing Educational Foundation for Coterie Classroom Immersions in thirty-eight classrooms ranging from 1st to 12th grades! The Coterie has professional teaching artists that will work closely with classroom teachers and provide student enrichment in the arts via Zoom. One of the teachers who is taking part in this grant is second-grade teacher, Mrs. Barb Robinson. What an awesome experience to have the Coterie Theatre grant for second... grade," said Mrs. Robinson. The 2nd grade teachers picked out a reading-level appropriate short script adapted for their class. For example, my class will read Anansi and the Five, and each student will read a different part on a ‘virtual field trip’ and will Zoom on their iPads with the Coterie story facilitator, Lacy Cunningham. The story also covers our social emotional learning standard. #coterietheatre #artseducation #classroomimmersions
