Words of wisdom from K9 Hemi!

Update: As of December 2nd, K9 Hemi and newly appointed Officer/K9 Handler Dorrel has successfully completed well over the 80hr minimum Handler Course trained by I80 K9 Training Services in Atlantic, Iowa. Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi then completed and successfully obtained the certification set by two different organizations: I80 K9 Training Services and the Heart of America Police Dog Association (HAPDA). These certifications allow Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi to get to work... and to protect the streets and the citizens of Tarkio along with the surrounding Atchison County area. Updates will be provided of K9 Hemi's activities when possible. Also updates are to come very soon for public events to meet K9 Hemi and Officer Dorrel. Fundraisers are also being planned to raise donations to provide K9 Hemi with the tools/training equipment needed to maintain the high level of training that is required to keep up with the ever changing certification courses. Met with Sander Bookman Sildver today. He wanted us to let y’all know that he would be in town. So if he comes by your house you can be aware he has acquired all his licenses to go door to door. I asked him for a brief message to send with this post: Hey people of Tarkio!!! I am a University student from Estonia, Europe. Just got my permit approved by the City of Tarkio. Met police officer Adam Stanton & Rebecca Jones. Now going to be meeting up with families in Tarkio sellin...g educational books and apps that: 1) help with ACT preparation by Princeton Review 2) help with college credit classes by McGraw Hill 3) help parents to help kids with new math & other subjects 4) study guides that help to brush up on last school year and save time doing homework & test preparation 5) and not least ... character building books and early learning program for toddlers to get a head start. On June 25th, at approximately 12pm, a male was riding his bicycle east on Maple Street between 7th and 8th. An approaching vehicle, described as a gray or silver late 90’s early 00’s Honda suv, struck the bicycle and rider while going west bound. The vehicle didn’t stop or report the collision. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact 660-736-5522.

Stay safe at home

On February 20th, 2020, K9 Hemi and her handler, Officer Adam Stanton, were requested to assist Atchison County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jacob Wheeler and Rock Port Police Dept. Officer Derek Morriss with a pursuit in progress. The driver of the vehicle, (McKale S. Burke, age 32) abandoned the vehicle in a field and fled on foot. K9 Hemi assisted with tracking the driver. Burke was taken into custody without incident by Deputy Wheeler and Officer Stanton. A search of the vehi...cle was conducted after a positive alert by K9 Hemi. Suspected methamphetamine was recovered. Burke was charged by Deputy Wheeler and Officer Morriss with multiple violations, including Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Driving While Intoxicated, Resisting Arrest by Fleeing and with multiple traffic violations. Burke was held at the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office in lieu of $7,500 cash bond or 10% to the court. Assisting with the search were Sheriff Dennis Martin and Chief Deputy Rick Sons. All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Happy Halloween and Happy Birthday K9 Void!

**ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY** Recently this individual thought it necessary to illegally dump a couch on Phantom Canyon Road. We are seeking the public's help in identifying this member of our community. Lets make him famous.

K9 Void helped out with a few vehicle searches this last week. Yesterday he helped Officer Bolin out on his search warrant. Four were arrested on possession charges and another on a warrant. Case is ongoing. Details on Tarkio Police Dept page.

K9 Void assisted on a traffic stop this morning. Methamphetamine and paraphernalia were discovered. Driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and the vehicle was towed.

K9 Void assisted with a search warrant today in Tarkio. Methamphetamine and methamphetamine paraphernalia were located and seized. The Tarkio Police Department was assisted by the Rock Port Police Department. This investigation is ongoing at this time.

K9 Void is here! He spent today meeting his new housemates and started his two weeks of bonding time with his handler. They both go to training next.

It’s going down folks. The K-9 project is not only in full swing, but taking an absolute swing to better our community. The council has approved the projects biggest step yet, the K-9 is approved for purchase. Donations are still accepted and sought.

K-9 units aren’t just drug dogs. K-9 duties include; tracking of missing persons, tracking of fleeing suspects, finding of evidence, a communication startup within the community, public outreach, etc.
