This is Ajani, my oldest son in the first two pictures. Ajani has grown tall, and he walks like he's adjusting to the new length of his limbs. Because he is. Because he is a ...child. When he walks from our home to SweetArt, a mere three blocks, I worry. "Text me as soon as you get home. Don't forget." Because Shaw, where we live, has become a picturesque neighborhood. Please know picturesque is synonymous with "mostly white". I've lived in Shaw for almost 20 years, and the g...entrification is...real. So I worry more as my children venture out in their own neighborhood because they are black. Mothering black children comes with an unspoken manual that few others could manage. It's exhausting to simultaneously fill a child with life's wonders while buffering them for life's heinous realities. Exhausting. Disturbing and murderous hate crimes, like that of George Floyd, are due in part to the majority sentiment that black lives, in fact, do not matter. Not ever really. Racism is big and ugly, even when it's the "long-time" Shaw resident who calls every city department to report your bakeshop because she believes one of your staff members spilled oil in the alley from a busted trash bag. Every. City. Department. And then she hand-delivers a letter to your home mailbox demanding that you, "go and clean it up right now." Your. Home. Mailbox. I'm at the age now where every reaction to injustice seems...justified. That's a dangerous place to be, y'all. That's also where exhaustion lives. I am exhausted. I do as my mother did and light a candle with names underneath praying for protection of...my family, my friends, my crew. Racism has never been quiet nor subtle. And ending racism is not black and brown people's battle to fight. You cannot give the sole responsibility of finding the solution to the people who never created the problem. We did NOT die yesterday, but there were definitely times that we thought we were going to. The response for our first day back was epic...one of our food vendors thought the crowd was for a funeral for the church across the street...someone else thought it was a block party...no, just people wanting a little #loveandmagic courtesy of SweetArt. Sometimes you feel like Peach Cobbler... One of my favorite Peach Cobbler recipes is in my ebook The Love + Magic Kitchen. Side note: peach cobbler is my favorite dessert, and I have it for every single birthday instead of cake. Download this recipe and more at www.loveandmagicstl.com. And try it with a crumb topping and turn it into a badass crumble Use the following crumb topping recipe:... 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 TBSP corn starch 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp cinnamon Pinch of salt (This is your dry mix. Whisk all these ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.) Then, in a small pot over low heat: add 1/4 cup + 2 TBSP soy-free @earthbalance or coconut oil, 2 TBSP olive oil (great for a "buttery" taste!), and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Whisk until combined and melted but not hot. (This is your wet mix). Gently combine your "wet mix" to your drt mix and mix with your fingertips. If too moist, add a touch more flour. This freezes beautifully, btw. True story: Two weeks ago I was visiting my daughter in Chicago, and we grabbed some deliciousness from one of my favorite places, @hoosiermamapie.
