#MeetSTLCC Meet Maria Darris, nursing instructor at STLCC-Florissant Valley. Maria discovered that working in healthcare came naturally to her when she took ...a job as a nurse's aide soon after immigrating to the U.S. Her path to the nursing profession continued when she joined the U.S. Army. While on active duty, she volunteered for all the nursing classes she could and trained as an orthopedic technician and a licensed practical nurse. Maria was honorably discharged in 2006. In addition to earning several medals throughout her Army career, she was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) after her last continental Unites States (CONUS) deployment. At the time, this award was the highest medal a U.S. soldier could obtain during a peacetime deployment. She enrolled at STLCC-Florissant Valley the following year, graduating in 2010 with an associate degree in nursing. She then went on to earn a bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Missouri-St.Louis. Her advice for students considering a nursing career is to remember that it's a public service. You will be caring for a population who needs not only your nursing skills and expertise in managing the disease process, but also your assistance in facilitating their emotional needs in coping with their illness, she says. I guarantee that if you work hard and focus, you will graduate from STLCC’s program prepared for a career as a trained, skillful, safe and effective nurse. Outside of work, Maria spends time reading about health and plant-based food eating as well as desertification and the environmental challenges facing the world. She also enjoys sewing, crafting, and going on walks and bike rides with her husband. To read Maria's full story, visit https://bit.ly/2FxJ1Ea.
