Attention Cardinals! Please see this letter from our superintendent, Mike Whittaker, regarding upcoming schedule changes: Dear Steelville R-III Community, I would like to take this opportunity to announce a change in the school calendar.... As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused us to adjust the way we operate as a school district. While our total number of positive cases (Student-14; Staff-10) has been relatively low, our number of quarantines has been higher (Student-385; Staff-39). As of Monday, November 16, 2020, our total COVID-19 positive cases were 7 (Student-2; Staf-5) and our current total number of quarantined individuals is 79 (Students-71; Staff-8). These numbers are down significantly from the previous week. While our numbers dropped this past week, I remain concerned about the increasing numbers in our area. In recent weeks, some schools in our area have been forced to go virtual or move to a hybrid schedule. At this time, I am confident that we will be able to continue educating the majority of our students in the school setting, however, we need to be prepared to move to our virtual option in the event that cases continue to rise. As a result, I have decided to change the calendar around our Thanksgiving break. The details are provided below: *Monday, Nov. 23: This will be a virtual learning day. All students K-12 will learn online from home. This will allow our teachers and students to practice the online learning platforms. Pre-School will be in session like normal. *Tuesday, Nov. 24: This will be a virtual learning day. All students K-12 will learn online from home. This will allow our teachers and students to practice the online learning platforms. Pre-School will be in session like normal. *Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 25-27: No School *Monday, Nov. 30: No School - This is a change in the calendar and will be made up at a later date. *Tuesday, Dec. 1: No School - This is a change in the calendar and will be made up at a later date. ***In the event that our students are exposed to COVID-19 during the break, these extra days could allow time for symptoms to develop prior to returning to school. In the end, this will help us reduce the number of students and staff that we may have to quarantine. Grab'N'Go meals will be available at Steelville Middle School on Monday, Nov. 23rd and Tuesday, Nov. 24th. Parents must call 573-775-2175 and talk to Kari to sign up for this meal service. Thank you for supporting the Steelville R-III School District. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause your family. Please understand, we are making every effort to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff. Sincerely, Mike Whittaker Superintendent
