One of the most important components of the Australia bushfire relief is wildlife rehabilitation. It is estimated that over 1 billion animals did not escape the fires, but those that did must recover from heat stress and burns and find new homes, food, and water. The demand is so great that school gymnasiums are being turned into temporary koala hospitals. Caring for burns is labor intensive and requires a lot of bandage changes and administering pain relief medications. Th...e money raised on February 18 will go towards the care of these animals in need. We have to be thankful for our local wildlife rehabilitation centers as well. At our event you could win a tour of the World Bird Sanctuary which rehabs local birds of prey and merchandise from the Wildlife Rescue Center which rehabs mammals, waterfowl, and reptiles. Look into volunteering at and donating to these amazing institutions as well. Learn more at https://www.worldbirdsanctuary.org/ and https://www.mowildlife.org/"

There is certainly a generation of zookeepers who would cite Steve Irwin as one of their biggest influences. Known for his exaggerated Australian accent and enormous passion for wildlife, he brought Australian species into our living rooms and our hearts. Steve's zoo, the Australia Zoo, is a member institution of the Australasian Zoo and Aquarium Association's (ZAA). Money from this fundraiser will be given to the ZAA which has a long term plan to rescue and rehabilitate animals now and to recover and regenerate their habitats for the future. Many zoos, like Australia Zoo and Zoos Victoria, have set up triage centers to care for injured koalas and other animals. Learn more about ZAA's plan here: https://www.zooaquarium.org.au/ After our event you could take home an Irwin family memorabilia basket from our raffle.

Australia is home to many unique species found nowhere else on Earth. One of the most famous being the red kangaroo. Red kangaroos can travel at speeds of 44 mph, which has helped some move away from the devastating fires, but with over 17 million acres burned, they are surrounded. Large kangaroo mobs have been observed springing away trying to find safety. Red kangaroos are in a group of marsupials called macropods. There are 54 species of macropods, also including the Matschie's tree kangaroo and the tammar wallaby. Macropods have large rear feet, as can be seen on the red kangaroo paintings donated to our fundraiser by the Nashville AAZK team. You could take home these adorable footprints after our fundraiser on Feb 18 at Earthbound Brewery from 4-11!

Saint Louis AAZK will be hosting a happy hour fundraiser at Earthbound Brewery on February 18 from 4:00-11:00. Earthbound will contribute one dollar for every pint sold and the money will be donated to the Australasian Zoo and Aquarium Association's (ZAA) Wildlife Conservation Fund. To inform people of the cause we are raising money for and to gather some interest in our event, check out our Facebook page for posts about the event as it gets closer. If you are unable to make it to our event you can donate to the ZAA here on our Facebook fundraiser.
