Select Medical Vice President of Employee Safety Marcia Easley receives COVID-19 vaccine at Select Specialty Hospital Durham from Director of Quality Management Christen Burns. Hi, my name is Marcia Easley and I’m the vice president of employee safety at Select Medical. I am also a 56 year-old, African American woman, and I am wearing this hat because I have crazy pandemic hair! I am getting the COVID-19 vaccine simply because I want to live. My mother used to say that to...morrow is not promised to anyone, but I believe this vaccine ups my odds of seeing many more tomorrows. As I hear statistics regarding the number of patients and healthcare workers who are COVID-19 positive, my heart is heavy as I think about all of my clinical colleagues who are taking care of these critically ill patients, have lost loved ones along the way, or battled back from the virus themselves during this pandemic. While no vaccine is 100 percent effective, this one is pretty close. I volunteered to share my thoughts with you today, because people in black and brown communities are dying at twice the rate of our white friends, colleagues and neighbors. I believe in science, and while there may be questions about the long-range effects of this vaccine, I would rather take my chances with that rather than having potentially serious and long-term health issues should I get COVID-19, and be fortunate enough to live through it. Everyone has to make their own personal choice, but part of my job is to get the word out about how to remain safe at work. In my 27-year healthcare career, there has never been a more important message than this one. When the opportunity to be vaccinated comes your way, I strongly encourage you to do it so we can all look forward to our tomorrows.
