Here is a snippet of a little something I am working on, feel free to comment and share your thoughts... "Those first lessons still hold true and have also evolved over time. The newest lesson that I am re-learning is that to be an educator of kids means you must ask questions. Not only questions of yourself to make sure you are on the right track, but questions of your charges because this is going to be the driving force behind their ability to learn the information you are... imparting on them. I see too many coaches today yelling and screaming at their students and players about a situation that might not be working and never asking them the question of why???; or what if we tried this; or any other million questions to foster situational awareness and critical thinking. It is easy as the adult to think you have all the answers because you have played or coached for most of your life and you know it all. But were you in the exact situation that resulted in what was your view a poor decision? Did you see all the external influences that affected that decision? Did you hear, every teammate that was making a demand on the ability to process a decision? Did you hear every parent that was yelling 900 conflicting directions from the opposite side of the field? Probably most important, could you read the mind of the little one who has been playing this game for a millisecond of their life? We forget sometimes as coaches that we are not the loudest voice in our players heads. Sometimes, it’s a picture of Dad driving the car home yelling that will influence a decision or sometimes it’s a fear that they will have to run laps at halftime for a poor decision that makes the poor decision occur. My point is simple, ask why a decision was made, and you might be surprised at what you find out. You will also be empowering your young student and athlete to stick up for their decisions and lean into their bravery and creativity to try something they feel will lead to a successful outcome."
