Thank you to six local Masonic Lodges whose members are making the holiday season more festive for 65 area teens. The Masons brought their Christmas for Children in Care program to kids aged 13 to 20 who are in foster care through the Jackson County Children’s Division of the Missouri Department of Social Services. Members went on a big buying spree and purchased $75 in gifts for each child. These youth would not otherwise have received gifts, said Kathy Rodgers, Director... of the Office of the Guardian ad Litem. The gifts will be delivered to the children through their caseworkers. Family Court Administrative Judge Jalilah Otto said, The entire Family Court is extremely grateful for the generosity of the Masonic Lodges during these trying times. Spreading joy, and making some of the children's wishes come true is what the holiday season is all about. Thank you! The Masons’ effort was spearheaded by James Lowman who reached out to the Court through Jackson County Legislative Chair Theresa Galvin. Participating lodges included: Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge No. 446, Kansas City Masonic Lodge No. 220, Swope Park Masonic Lodge No. 617, Sheffield Masonic Lodge No. 625, Temple Gate Masonic Lodge No. 299, and East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 630. Ten individual donors also participated. Pamela Williams of the Children’s Division coordinated the effort to get the gifts to the children. Thanks to all!

No jury trials will be conducted at the Kansas City Courthouse at 415 E 12th Street during the week of November 2, 2020. Jury service for jurors scheduled to serve at the downtown courthouse on Monday November 2, and Tuesday November 3, 2020 is cancelled. This is due to Court operations at the Kansas City Courthouse only moving back to Phase 1 per Administrative Order 2020-179. Jurors summoned to the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence are still scheduled to report on these dates.

Note to Jurors Summoned to Report on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2020 in INDEPENDENCE. The Circuit Court of Jackson County has long recognized the importance of assuring that citizens summoned to report for Jury Service are also able to vote on Election Day. It has consistently assured that citizens who were participating in the jury process, as either a prospective or actual juror on an election day, had the statutorily provided three hour block of time at either... the start or end of the day while the polls were open during which they could vote. Moreover, as provided by Missouri Statute, any prospective juror can request a six month postponement of their jury service for any reason unless they have received a postponement previously in the past six months. In addition, jurors who do report for service will have time to vote on Election Day before or after their service. Juror report times are currently 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Jurors can expect to be in the courthouse for approximately three to four hours as the jury selection process has been modified due to health concerns regarding COVID-19. So, if you have been summoned for Election Day, please consider your options and take the steps that work best for you to fulfill both of your civic obligations.
