Army Major William Hecker III, of St. Louis Missouri, who lost his life on January 5, 2006, was among five soldiers killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Humvee in Najaf, south of Baghdad during convoy operations. Hecker was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, TX. Also killed were Capt. Christopher P. Petty, 33, of Vienna, Va.; Sgt. 1st Class Stephen J. White, 39, of Talladeg...a, Ala.; Sgt. Johnny J. Peralez Jr., 25, of Kingsville, Texas; and Pvt. Robbie M. Mariano, 21, of Stockton, Calif. Hecker had been deployed to Iraq just after Thanksgiving 2005. Hecker went to West Point, where he studied engineering management and sang in the glee club. He had been stationed in Oklahoma, Germany, Bosnia, and Herzegovina in the '90s. He is survived by his wife and four children. Happy birthday to the United States Marine Corps. In addition to marking the 245th birthday of the Marine Corps, 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of World War II battles like Iwo Jima and Okinawa, in Japan, the 70th anniversary of Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, and the 55th anniversary of Marines arriving in Da Nang, Vietnam. Army Sgt. Issac B. Jackson, 27, of Plattsburg, Mo.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.; died Oct. 27 in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an IED. Also killed was Army Sgt. Fernando Delarosa, Army Sgt. 1st Class Luis M. Gonzalez, Army Sgt. Dale R. Griffin, Army Spc. Jared D. Stanker, Army Pfc. Christopher I. Walz and Army Sgt. Patrick O.
