How to Keep your Plants/Trees Thriving this Summer. Moisture and Mulch. Moisture: Have a water source close by. A hose to drag to water them, or even a pail to carry some is better then not watering. Summers in MO can be hot for a few weeks, so checking on your plants every week will insure they aren't drying out. Mulch: Put a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around the plants. There's a variety of different ones that work. Ground hardwood bark, wood chips, grass clippings, straw, etc. You want the moisture to stay in and the weeds to stay out.
