Sad news from the conservation front. Scientists now believe the Hyacinth (Blue) Macaw, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, is mostly extinct in the wild and extremely rare in Zoos around the world. Their numbers are so low that the captive gene-pool may be insufficient for successful breeding and reintroduction into the wild. The main reason for their extinction may be habitat destruction due to deforestation throughout its range although the pet trade and animal collection industries may also have played a hand in it.
