With the wet and cold weather upon us the Scott City Police Department would like to remind its residents and those traveling during this busy time of year to practice extra vigilance while operating a motor vehicle. Inclement weather and distracted driving are a common cause of motor vehicle accidents. This morning the Scott City Police Department, along with other local agencies, had the pleasure of participating in the Shop with a Hero program. Each year a child is matched up with a local first responder through the program for a shopping spree at Wal-Mart with funds raised by the community, local businesses, individual sponsorship of children and a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Sergeant Atlas (School Resource Officer), Officer Scherer, and Detective Cavaness offere...d their time to interact with the selected children from the Scott City area and had a blast helping the Cape Girardeau Wal-Mart bring some holiday joy to these children. Thankfully the program was not suspended this year due to Covid-19 and was able to be structured accordingly with proper precautions. The Scott City Police Department would like to thank all of the local businesses and community members who support the program through donations.

As many of you will be out taking advantage of the Black Friday deals and the gift giving season right around the corner, the Scott City Police Department would like to remind the Scott City residents of the importance of record keeping for purchased items or items received as a gift. Almost every item you purchase contains identifying features such as brand, make, model, and serial numbers. In the case of jewelry, photographs or a record of the type of gem, style of cut, and... metal type can be retained. This information is something of value the citizens can provide in efforts to assist the police department in recovering their property in the unfortunate event a theft occurs. So remember... keep receipts, write down or photograph make, model and serial numbers because it helps us help you. A friendly reminder from: Detective Cavaness Scott City Police Department
