This morning the Scott City Police Department, along with other local agencies, had the pleasure of participating in the Shop with a Hero program. Each year a c...hild is matched up with a local first responder through the program for a shopping spree at Wal-Mart with funds raised by the community, local businesses, individual sponsorship of children and a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Sergeant Atlas (School Resource Officer), Officer Scherer, and Detective Cavaness offered their time to interact with the selected children from the Scott City area and had a blast helping the Cape Girardeau Wal-Mart bring some holiday joy to these children. Thankfully the program was not suspended this year due to Covid-19 and was able to be structured accordingly with proper precautions. The Scott City Police Department would like to thank all of the local businesses and community members who support the program through donations.

With the wet and cold weather upon us the Scott City Police Department would like to remind its residents and those traveling during this busy time of year to p...ractice extra vigilance while operating a motor vehicle. Inclement weather and distracted driving are a common cause of motor vehicle accidents. As the construction continues on the Route 61 overpass, I-55 interchange, and Route M intersection please be aware of and practice caution within work zones. Maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. Limit unnecessary distractions, such as cell phones and other electronic devices. Adhere to the speed limit and slow down while the roads are wet or icy. Be aware of pedestrians and other vehicles around you. Check your surroundings before making lane changes or turns.

The Scott City Police Department was able to brighten the holiday season for a few families. Mattresses, box springs and bedding were provided to children in ne...ed within the Scott City area thanks to donations from Cape West Rotary, Slumberland Furniture, and Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri. The officers were overjoyed to have an opportunity to distribute items which will bring daily comfort to community members.
