St. Charles County Historical Society Archives 05.12.2020

The SCCHS Archives has installed a new exhibit featuring political memorabilia from the Society’s collection. Promotional items and ephemera from Democratic and Republican party candidates running in federal, state and local elections will be presented including buttons, pins, posters and other items. Memorabilia is a good way to look back at history and elections before the time of social media and even television to see how candidates used word of mouth and advertising to spread their message to the general public. The Archives is open by appointment only Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 10am-3pm. Please call 636-946-9828 or email [email protected]

Today, on National Women’s Equality Day, archivists remember the centennial of the 19th amendment and the suffragette movement leading up to it and seek to raise awareness of continued struggles for equality. Many archives, museums, and other organizations are engaging the public in discussions of the history of the right to vote, which at times has excluded many people based on gender, race, and sexual orientation. Thanks to an abundance of letters, photographs, and audio an...d video footage housed in archival collections, members of the public can learn about this historic movement firsthand from the words and pictures of the people who fought for it. The SCCHS Archives has mounted an exhibit on the 19th Amendment Centennial with posters provided by the National Archives and photos of women before- during - and after the Vote. Come see this exhibit by making an appointment or knocking on the front door Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 10am - 3pm. And please wear a mask.
