Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences becoming part of Rockhurst University means lots of new connections are being forged between faculty and staff colleagues and students. Check out the new surprising connection sophomore Emma Barben has with her grandmother at https://bit.ly/38jkuyo
When Lori Walters was 10, her grandfather was hospitalized with cancer. She remembers sitting in the hospital watching the nurses and still recalls how they "changed his day." She wanted to do the same for people, so she became a nurse. Health care needs hit home as Walters took care of her mother for most of her life, still driven by that motivation to help others. Watch as Walters talks about her story, what shaped her passion for nursing, and how she's still motivated to make a difference in others all others today. https://bit.ly/3dPNMFC
Medical assisting did everything that I needed, hour-wise. When I did this, I was a single parent. I laugh and tell people I had 3.5 kids. [There] was just no way that I could manage all of the kids and do nursing 12 hours out of the day. I couldn't do it. So medical assisting was a great fit for me. The program allows and trains individuals to be entry-level medical office assistants. That means that it gives you a basic set of skills that you can go into a doctor's office ...and work and assist in patient care. - Donna Gardner, Director of Medical Assisting Program Thank you #MedicalAssistants for your work! #MARWeek
For Donna Gardner, managing "3.5 kids" wasn't going to be an obstacle for her to achieve her goals. A single mom working a job as a medical assistant because it allowed time for her to raise her family, Gardner took class after class until she became the first person in her family to get a degree. Today, Gardner heads the Medical Assisting Program at Saint Luke's College of Health Sciences at Rockhurst University, where she supports healthcare students looking to write their own career success stories. www.rockhurst.edu/medical-assisting
Hilda Mondragon, who was "made to be a nurse," according to her fellow nurses and professors, plans to get a masters and give to others both in Kansas City and literally around the world what her nurses gave her in her darkest moments: love, care, support, purpose and a passion for helping people.
The Rockhurst community students, staff and faculty are stepping up to keep our campus safe. Instead of going to large parties, bars and concerts like we're used to, instead we are finding new ways to engage with our friends and family.
Earlier in 2020, Saint Luke's College of Health Sciences officially added "at Rockhurst University" to its name. Uniting the schools expanded Rockhurst’s and Saint Luke’s ability to meet the growing need for health care professionals throughout Kansas City and beyond. Virtually every graduate of Saint Luke's finds a career in the industry -- and healthcare jobs, be it as a medical assistant, in nursing, or as a nurse practitioner, have never been in greater demand.
