Thank you to Brielle, Aaden, Chase and Jack for coming in on their first day of Christmas break to help clean the Church in preparation for Christmas Masses.

We received the following message from the Diocese: From the Office of Youth and Child Protection This time of the year, many parents wrestle with the idea of purchasing a phone for their child(ren). Kids are expecting phones as early as kindergarten. Here is a link that you can pass on to parents regarding a wireless phone service that is safe and affordable for children. There is no kick back to me or the diocese. In the effort to keep children safe, this offers a nice ...alternative that protects children from overuse of screen time and exposure to the dangers of the internet. The phone is very low cost and the service is $20/month. It looks just like all the other cell phones too, except it has no internet browser, app store or social media. It does allow calls and texts. I have personally used this service and found it very good. Here’s a link to the company and more information: https://gabbwireless.com/our-mission/ Carrie Cooper See more
Christmas Novena December 17 - 24: Mass + Devotions. Also, please note added times for confession: 6pm weekdays from Thursday December 17 - Tuesday December 22.
A Message from Ms. Saunders: There was an error on this year's calendar. The last day of school prior to Christmas break should've been a half day, not a full day of school. We are correcting that. We will now be dismissing on Friday, December 18 at 11:30. The lunch that was scheduled for the 18th will be shifted to December 16. I sincerely apologize for the confusion.... Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. Jenny

Happy (belated) Feast Day to our dear School Sisters of Christ the King!
Another reflection on the Kingship of Christ which is worth your consideration.
"Far from being a relic of the ancient or medieval Church, this feast was only established in 1925 just as monarchies were disappearing and, more importantly, as Christian thought was being driven from society. As atheistic governments arose throughout the world, they rejected any limits to their power. Pius XI, who spent most of his pontificate dealing with these hostile governments, intended this feast as a vindication of Christ the King’s rights in the public square. It was to be a check on those who would sever governance from truth and thus run roughshod over the weak."

A Letter From Ms. Saunders: In light of an increase in Covid exposures, potential Covid exposures, a positive Covid student case, and a number of pending test results, the decision has been made to shut down the school next week. Teachers are not being asked to teach for the week of Thanksgiving, but they will still be instructing virtually the week after Thanksgiving. I was very hopeful that we would be able to avoid this scenario, but perhaps these extra two days off will ...translate into fewer students exposed at school thus creating more days in session. We will view this two week absence from school as a chance to reset our Covid exposures. Even though we won't be in school, please let me know if your child develops Covid symptoms. In the recent positive case we had here at school, the student was vomiting, dizzy, and had a fever. If you feel you or your child has Covid, please let me know. I am in fact required to notify the health department if staff or students here at St. James have positive test results. If you have questions regarding school work, your child's classroom teacher will be able to answer those. For any other questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Please know that I'm praying for you and for us all. God bless, Jenny

A message from the principal: Late yesterday afternoon, I received the following email message from Dan Peters, Superintendent of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Catholic Diocese: "In order to proactively respond to the serious increase in the COVID infection rate over the past few weeks and the possibility of greater infection transmittal over the upcoming holiday, the Bishop has decided to have all Kansas City-St. Joseph elementary and high schools move to virtual learning for t...he week after Thanksgiving (November 30 December 4). During that week, each school will monitor their school’s infection status and determine if they need to continue virtual learning even longer or resume in-person learning." To be honest, this message took me a bit by surprise. While we have had a tremendous increase lately in students out for exposures, we still have had a very low number of positive cases in our school: two confirmed cases. We have worked very hard to keep as many kids in the building as possible at all times, and we will continue to do just that. I had sincerely hoped that we would make it until at least Christmas without having to enact a school-wide closure. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Teachers have been preparing students for virtual instruction, and they will be in contact with you regarding how this will work in their individual classrooms. If there is any way I can help any of you meet the needs of your students, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Finally, I want to sincerely thank all of you for your efforts to insure that our students are safely in the building. Our families have been very quick to communicate any issues that they have had with Covid to help prevent exposure here in the building. I believe this is a testament to the fact that at St. James, we are a family. I am once again reminded of what a privilege it is for me to serve the needs of the students, staff, and families of St. James. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns that you might have. I may not have the answers you are looking for, but I will do my best to get you as much accurate information as possible. You are all in my prayers, Jenny Saunders, Principal St. James Catholic School
Daily Mass - Friday November 13 - St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Josaphat. He was a 17th Century martyr who was killed for trying to bring unity between eastern (Orthodox) and western (Cat...holic) Churches. In the south end we are blessed to have neighbors who belong to the Ukrainian Catholic Church (a result of the re-unification to which St. Josaphat witnessed with his blood!) and are members of St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church. Over the years, countless Ukrainian families have sent their children to Saint James School, and not a few of them have become active members of our parish! See more
