Smithville Area Fire Protection District 11.11.2020

What's it going to cost me? The Smithville Area Fire Protection District has a 35-cent levy increase on the November 3rd ballot. To determine what the increase would be for homeowners, you must know your assessed valuation. Assessed valuation is 19% of the appraised value as set by the County, it has nothing to do with market value or what your property may be worth if you were to sell it. You assessed valuation can be found on the Clay or Platte County Assessor websites, dep...ending on where you reside. To determine your cost, take your assessed valuation and multiply that by 0.35. Then, divide that number by 100. The result is what the increase would cost you. For example, I received a real estate ad showing a house in Hills of Shannon listed for sale for $285,000. I looked up the property on the Clay County Assessor site; it has an appraised value of $215,600 and an assessed value of $40,960. 40,960 x 0.35 = 14,336. 14,336 divided by 100= $143.36 annually or $11.95 per month. More information is available on our website, www.safpd.com Thank you, Dave Cline, Fire Chief See more

The Smithville Area Fire Protection District has "Question 1" on the November 3rd ballot, a 35-cent operating levy increase. If passed, the Fire District will hire 12 additional firefighters and be able to fully staff Fire Station #3. This measure will double the current staffing; putting a minimum of 6 firefighters on every day and staffing 2 fire trucks. The measure will decrease response times throughout the entire district. The measure will ultimately lower insurance rate...s for citizens and businesses as the fire district is re-assessed by ISO (a company the rates/grades fire protection). The cost increase on a $285,000 home would be under $12 per month. The increase will not be applied until the 2022 tax bill (which you will receive in December of 2021). Station #3 is fully equipped with trucks right now. All voters in the district (the entire 112 square miles) incorporating the City of Smithville as well as homes in rural Clay and Platte are able to vote on the issue, regardless of where your voting location is or what zip code you are in. This includes property with addresses in Smithville, Kearney, Liberty, Kansas City, Platte City, Edgerton, Trimble, and Holt. At last night’s meeting of the Board of Directors, SAFD recognized Caleb Slaughter for his actions on September 23rd. Caleb was a passenger in a car driven by his aunt when she suffered a seizure while driving on Highway 169 near Hospital Drive. Caleb was able gain control of the car, get his aunt’s foot off the gas pedal, and stop the car before there was an accident. Caleb’s actions that day undoubtedly saved others. Caleb’s family was in attendance as he was presented a Chief’s Award for Excellence for his quick actions and service to the Smithville Community. Congratulations Caleb, well done!

We often talk about increasing runs and resources being stretched thin, it happened again today. Smithville Firefighters on the scene of a motor vehicle accident and then receiving a second call. Sometimes we are just delaying in getting there, sometimes we just aren’t able to respond. Today was another one of those times, we were not able to respond. This is the 60th time this has happened in 2020.
