Rock, Jazz, and Blues Piano Lessons 03.07.2021

Although I majored in Music Education through the majority of my college career, I opted to get a bachelor of arts in music vs school teacher certification. I knew I was moving to New York or San Francisco immediately after graduation to continue playing with artists as a session player at night while teaching piano during the day as I already had been for 5+ years at that point. Even though I had piano lessons in grade school and played as much as I could when I had the chance, studying with Carol Beth True at Webster University was a huge influence on playing. I started taking my practice sessions more seriously and began the never ending journey into the endless greatness of 1950s/early 1960's bebop and hard bop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnFahcNonTA

For more advanced students, I use the www.davefrankjazz.com method for teaching improvisation technique. Here are two of Dave's masterclasses. The first is on the improvisational method of the Grateful Dead; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs_4TQLycQI The second dives into the technique and style the wonderful rock pianist Bruce Hornsby, who was a frequent guest of the Grateful Dead's from 1990 and onward; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHlPM700df0

Garth Hudson's talent and musical influence on classic rock, the Band, Bob Dylan, and Woodstock 1969 was virtually unknown to me until we picked him up near Levon Helm's legendary "Barn" en route to a weekend of concerts in upstate NY in September 2012. After spilling coffee on his pants 10min before giving a lecture at Colgate University (a talk he gave wearing my pants), we played two concerts; one in Hamilton NY and one in Oswego NY. Not only was Garth one of the most talented and skilled pianists I'd ever seen, he was an even better person. This is the 2nd (Oswego) of the two shows we played together. The solo section in Dear Prudence has a keyboard breakdown between Garth & I that was quite fun. https://archive.org/details/genttreadly2012-09-15
