Peripheral nerve entrapments, also known as PNE's are a rather rare but debilitating and painful conditions. Most PNEs have symptoms such as numbness, tingling, loss of sensation to touch, decrease in flexibility(especially with specific movements), and not least of all pain. Nerves affected by PNEs have are being compressed and slowly start to lose their ability to function. PNE's are caused by tendons, muscles, fascia, or even joint misalignments. My suggestion is not to immediately run to your surgeon for meds and surgery(which maybe necessary in some serious cases), but rather seek out soft tissue specialist like an Active Release Techniques practitioner in your area. These professionals can treat these problems by conservative(and often less expensive means. Great health to all. EP the DC
Disorder of the Day: Mechanical neck pain As much as 90% of all neck pain are a result of altered biomechanics. This means, due to soft tissue problems due to the everyday stresses we put on our bodies in sleep, work, driving, hobbies, or other activities. ART providers call these repetitive use(or misuse) injuries. The greater the portion of everyday you spend doing an activity, say computer use, the higher the chance it may eventually cause a problem. Here's how: # when... typing or working at your computer make sure you use a comfortable chair with proper low and mid back support # use good spinal posture, (NO hunched Neck!!) #make sure your keyboard is in good position (elbows bent at about 90 degrees) # center of monitor at about eye level # keep shoulders back # get up and move around every 20 minutes to give your body a break Try these things at your workspace and see your local manual therapist or chiropractor if the pain continues. It's rib week here at RBC. Rib joints (AKA Costovertebral joints) can become subluxated or inflammed just like many other joints. Symptoms include mid back pain, pain that wraps around the ribcage, pain while breathing (in or out), or pain with movement of the torso. See a doctor (I like DCs) to get proper diagnosis and treatment for these symptoms. I've found muscles and ligaments often play a significant role in this condition. Have a great weekend.
