It's National Concussion Awareness Day! Did you know that one in five high school athletes will experience a concussion? And it's not just athletes nearly 75% of the 2.8 million traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are concussions. To raise awareness today, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is proud to collaborate with brain injury self-advocate Brooke Mills for the fifth year. Brooke will be taking over our Instagram account at 10 a.m. EST today. Follow @bia_usa to see what Brooke is doing to raise awareness https://www.biausa.org/brain-/community/concussionstorywall

Please VOTE today !! The most important right you have is your right to vote, a right millions have fought and died for to obtain and to keep for you. At 730am today, I was expecting a good sized crowd and slow procedures at the poll. I was wrong on both counts. This morning was abnormally cool at 60 degrees, and I was voter #34. The poll workers had been there since well before 6am, dedicated, hard working people, yet the number of voters turning out were just barely twice... the temperature ! The poll workers were upbeat and cheery, swift and organized, but it felt lonely. They were all set up for a crowd, and I hope they are not disappointed by the end of the day. Be proud, be involved, vote !

Woke up this morning and read about this terrible multi-car crash that appears to have started with a semi-truck losing control. I wrote this post based off the original KY3 story that shares some of my thoughts on this crash. Thoughts and prayers to all that were involved and their families. https://ransin.com/fatal-multi-car-crash-shuts-down-i-44-n/

Our new sign is in! We are seeing many new varieties of native flowers coming up this year, and the yellow finches are arriving to eat the seeds!

Naturalized Bird, Bee and Butterfly Habitat That’s what we’ve been working on developing here at our office for the last 3 years as a beautiful and ecological alternative to the usual sod, irrigation, fertilizer, pesticide, insecticide type of landscaping. Sure, it is not a finely manicured golf course like lawn as you typically see around new offices, but Tim and I are trying to lead the way in a new direction which will waste less resources, pollute less ground water, and p...rovide much needed environment for our pollinators, all the while producing beautiful native plants and flowers for everyone to enjoy ! We have commissioned Wendy and Todd Kuehnel of Splinter Kustom Kreations to design, build and install a sign which fits in with the environment and explains our mission. These pictures are of the test version of the sign, and Wendy, Todd and Mark digging the post holes yesterday. We hope to have the sign finished and installed soon as a great improvement to our entire office project !

We are coming up wildflower blooms everywhere! The bright yellow flowers will certainly be a majority as they were last year but we are seeing more and more diversity and hope the trend continues season after season in the future!

Despite the fact that the public has been travelling far less over the last 2 months, the rate of fatal vehicle crashes has exploded. Fewer miles driven resulting in more fatal crashes only means one thing: a huge increase in careless driving. The National Safety Council reported yesterday that across our nation the number of fatal crashes jumped 14% in just one month, March 2020. https://ransin.com/fatal-car-crashes-spike-during-covid-19/

Today is World Bee Day ! Yep, I never knew that, either ! Bee Day ?? Why ?? Beecause (sorry, couldn’t resist!) bees are very important to our food chain and survival.... You’ve heard the phrase busy as a bee and that’s really an understatement. Those little guys and gals do nothing but work, reproduce, die, and their offspring repeat the perpetual cycle. That is, until unintentionally we begin slowly killing them off with pesticides and destroying the habitat they require to survive. At our office, we are striving to do our part with naturalized habitat, indigenous flowers, and we are going to put up bee houses, like Dan Chiles’ company makes: Beestra. https://www.beefoster.com/ Our natural landscape is beginning to get established; it takes several seasons for the good plants to crowd out the bad weeds. Here a are a few pictures of what is beginning to bloom, and we look forward to a wide array of species, colors, and styles throughout the summer months. (pics to follow, on my phone) So, please take 10 minutes and read up a bit about how important bees are to us and how you can make little changes in your own world to help make our entire world a much better place.

As I write this on Sunday May 3rd, I wish we were all gathered together at American Legion Post 639 on South scenic for our annual motorcycle awareness ride. However, as we all know this year is different The ride had to be postponed and we hope to hold it in August or possibly later this fall... In the meantime, everyone needs to remember that the importance of motorcycle awareness and safety remains critical every day all year long. With this beautiful early summer weather, friends and family are going to be getting out on the roads and enjoying the relaxation of a good ride So this means that everyone everywhere needs to pay special attention and keep all of us in our community safe If you look for motorcycles, you will see them!

I truly hate seeing this. Super Bowl night we lost yet another member of our motorcyclist community in a crash that should have been prevented. My thoughts in this blog below. Prayers to his family and friends. https://ransin.com/springfield-motorcyclist-killed-super-b/

I came into the office on New Year's day to get things done knowing it would be quiet and decided to take a break and get some exercise in the sunshine picking up trash along the highway and around our building. It is really sad how much trash people throw out their car windows or that blows out of the back of a pick up truck beds. It was interesting to note that there was only one plastic straw as compared to the many in the past, However the number of cigaret butts from peo...ple emptying their ash trays along the roadside remains incredibly high. Ending this thought on a happy note, I smiled when I saw the dandelion blooming in the sunshine welcoming the New Year!
