Honoring the Class of 1971 Our Golden Graduate are alumni who graduated 50 years ago. This year we will be unable to host our Golden Graduate celebration. To honor the Class of 1971 we will post their stories and pictures. Below is one of these stories. To have your, a friend’s or a loved ones story posted email [email protected]. Lloyd Miller Communications and Computer Technology Congratulations to Lloyd as he celebrates the 50th anniversary of his graduation from R...anken. Lloyd had this to say about the impact of his Ranken education, Ranken's greatest impact in my life was how its training and strong work ethic positioned me to be initially successful in the US Navy immediately upon graduation. The skills obtained at Ranken allowed me to enlist in the US Navy, during the height of the Viet Nam war, and immediately propelled me into one of the most technologically advanced areas of the early 1970's - Satellite Communications. Over my four years I became responsible for 2nd and then 6th Fleet readiness of these shipboard systems assigned as a member of the Admiral's staff. I received several letters of commendation for my services. This success positioned me to go on to a very successful career in IT and Project Management to where I have managed projects and programs in the tens of millions of dollars and provide consulting services at the CXX level of corporations. Ranken was the catalyst I needed to position me for success, and I believe to this day it continues to do so for so many of its graduates! Lloyd is married and lives in South County. He and his wife, Mary, have 5 children and 13 grandchildren and both still work full time. They are members of the Patriot Guard Riders and enjoy many hobbies and Lloyd is learning to play the bugle so that he can play taps at military funerals. His favorite Ranken memories are building an operational radar system and watching his two sons, Lloyd, Automotive 2001, and Justin, IT 2002, graduate from Ranken. See more

There is no standardized definition of ‘nontraditional student’. The phrase often refers to young adults who have difficulty finding a fulfilling vocation, returning to a post-secondary environment after some years in the workforce. At Ranken Technical College, one example of this increasingly common route is Brett Stockman, who graduated from the Plumbing certificate program in 2019. Brett reflected on his circumstances before enrolling at Ranken: college dropout . . . wo...rking the night shift. . . lacking much in the way of ambition or hope for a career that didn’t involve gasoline, hot dogs and racing the sun home. Ready for a change, Brett toured Ranken, met Plumbing Instructor Dave Munie and quickly enrolled. Dave says, Brett came to Ranken with management experience, so he matriculated effortlessly into Ranken’s work ethics expectations . . . [he] jumped right into the curriculum and was a great problem solver and mentor to other students. Brett embraced the Ranken experience, referring to his two semesters as a true adventure, one that has been rewarding beyond belief. In the course of his studies, he eagerly familiarized himself with the various tools, became a SkillsUSA state finalist, jumped at the chance to conduct student-led tours for other potential plumbers, and was especially proud of the opportunity to install a permanent grease trap in the College’s cafeteria. Today, Brett Stockman is a Residential Service 2nd year apprentice with E&M Plumbing, working towards Journeyman status. It is fair to say that he views his path towards a new career with a sense of wonder: the 9-month Plumbing day program at Ranken quite literally changed my entire future. It took me from a dead-end retail job to a well-paying, secure and rewarding profession that I’m proud of and I enjoy. Brett is even considering returning as a plumbing instructor himself in the future. Looking back today, I am certain I am on the path I was meant to walk, Brett says.
