Public health solutions often promote human rights and social justice. Sometimes though, individual and collective rights, can stand in opposition - and we need to work to find a balance with public health initiatives. See more here: https://www.hhrjournal.org//editorial-intersections-of-he/. We see this play out frequently now with COVID issues around masking, quarantine, etc. - actions that promote collective health but pull on people's sense of their individual rights. The article below (which includes input from one of our public health students Devin!) explores another public health/individual rights issue re tracking HIV outbreaks. The use of molecular surveillance is a "good" public health tool - but what and whose rights can it compromise? https://www.poz.com//questioning-benefits-molecular-survei

The graph below shows how the COVID-19 virus spread and caused a cluster in Boone County over a month long period. The cluster began when two people traveled ou...tside of the county and were exposed to COVID-19. As shown below, they then unknowingly spread it to many others in the community, particularly in the workplace. In total there were 98 close contacts identified during contact tracing as being connected to the first two cases; 28 of those went on to test positive. Please note there may have been additional exposures not recorded. This illustrates the importance of social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and disinfection in order to protect you and your loved ones. See more

Have you heard of the Swiss Cheese Model? This analogy explains why a combination of mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing, and cleaning and disinfectin...g is so important to stopping the spread of COVID-19. Each "slice," or layer of protection, is not perfect on its own because each layer has holes. But together they can provide better protection for everyone in our community. See more
