April is Autism Acceptance Month, which focuses on providing information and resources for communities to be more aware of autism, promote acceptance, and be more inclusive in everyday life (per Autism Society). Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood and can impact communication skills, social skills, and/or self regulation skills. Studies have shown that providing children fewer toys to play with leads to a more positive impact on cognitive skills. Fewer toys allows for repetitions to cement skills and helps children develop imagination skills, improve attention span, and decrease overstimulation. This doesn’t mean throw away all the toys! Rather, you can separate toys in small groups and rotate each group every few weeks!
