The Christian High Holy Day of Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day (the seventh Sunday) from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit u...pon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:131). The holiday is also called "White Sunday" or "Whitsunday" or "Whitsun", especially in the United Kingdom, where traditionally the next day, Whit Monday, was also a public holiday (since 1971 fixed by statute on the last Monday in May). The Monday after Pentecost is a legal holiday in many European countries. In Eastern Christianity, Pentecost can also refer to the entire fifty days of Easter through Pentecost inclusive; hence the book containing the liturgical texts is called the "Pentecostarion". Since its date depends on the date of Easter, Pentecost is a "moveable feast". Pentecost is one of the Great feasts in the Eastern Orthodox Church, a Solemnity in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, a Festival in the Lutheran Churches, and a Principal Feast in the Anglican Communion. Many Christian denominations provide a special liturgy for this holy celebration.

Thur, Feb 11: Let Us Go On... In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his ...companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, ‘Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.’ And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. (Mark 1:35-39) There’s an urgent tone to the disciples’ voices when they find him at the deserted place praying. Everyone is searching for you, they say. I’m fascinated by Jesus’ non-response to their anxiety. Mark says Jesus simply and calmly announces: Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. Jesus will not be deterred by what are others’ priorities. Instead, he remains singularly focused on his mission to proclaim the message of God’s hope. In our multi-device world, where someone is almost always searching for us (even if it is just spam email marketing the latest sale in our favorite store), what would it be like for us to channel this calm non-reactivity of Jesus? How might our lives be different if we adopted his singularity of purpose? It’s not a coincidence that Jesus’ ability to stay focused, calm, and non-anxious follows a period of intense prayer, exemplifying the efficaciousness of meditation and a regular spiritual practice. What would you need to change in your spiritual practices in order to connect with even a fragment of Jesus’ non-reactivity? Or, if you don’t have a regular spiritual practice, how might you incorporate a bit of silence and reflection in your life to help ground you against the anxieties of this world? Today’s prayer: From a dark and deserted place, Jesus, you emerge to meet the disciples’ anxiety with calm and purpose. Help me connect with your groundedness and composure, so that I might exude your holy peacefulness and intentionality in all I do.
What do I do with this anger? When someone decides to take out their bitter revenge on innocent people that results in a boy and a girl having to face the rest... of their lives without their mommy, I feel anger. Typically, this is where a believer will tell me I have to love my enemies and consider that my sin is just as bad. Agreed on both counts. However, I also know that Jesus felt there was an appropriate time for anger...(I believe there are stories about tables and millstones). When Jesus saw people undone over the death of Lazarus, he didn't shame them for not having faith, he wept with them even knowing what he was about to do. I'm no scholar, but I believe Jesus feels the same anger we do because the actions of one have caused the little ones to suffer. After a time, Jesus will remind us that holding on to anger will eventually cause us to suffer even more, and will tell us to lay it down. He will also help us understand that for someone to do such an evil thing, they must have also been hurt, and unheard and suffered. That will help us to forgive and realize we are all capable of evil things. None of us is righteous, not even one. But for now, I think it's ok to feel it...Jesus isn't rushing us past the anger, he'll just be ready to take it when we're ready to let it go. I love him so much for that. ~ Lisa Barry

"As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene. No one can read ...the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life." ~~Albert Einstein~~ Drawing by Katherine Brown
